Back in September last year, Croft were approached by Hereford Aeroclub asking if we would like to help them plot a race route around the orchards of Shobdon Aerodrome which offered the unique chance to run along the landing strip.
Jumping at the chance to be included in this opportunity the club was able to help by arrrange the route with the permission of Corbett Farms and help out with the logistics of using Entry Central.
50 runners were at the start line on the runway on Saturday afternoon, either running the 2km fun run or the 10k multiterrain race.
The 5k looped past the main airfield buildings and hangars to finish a circular route on the landing strip.
The 10k branched off after the airfield buildings to run a truely multiterrain race – some on tarmac, a lot on stoney gravel farm tracks and the remaining on orchard field margins. It was also a mix of level and hilly running – a real test for all runners.
Three juniors and one senior ran down the landing strip to cross the line of the 5k, Saffi Reid in 8.25, Hughes Brenin in 9.45, Avril Hardwick in 13.24 and our youngest runner Oliver Ingle in 14.29.
The 10k male race was won by Todd Wright in 40.25, followed by David Wood 43.48 and Alec Harper in third 44.59.
The lady’s race was won by Cecilia Graham 49.49, followed by Celia Speake 50.44 and Steph Robertson in third 52.21.
All the finishers for both distances were entered into a draw for a 20 minute trial flight with Herefordshire Aero Club at a mutually acceptable time – this was won by Jeanette Steadman.
A huge well done to all the runners and thank you to Corbett Farms and everyone at Croft Ambrey Running Club who helped to make this race possible, including all our fantastic marshalls who doubled up as photographers!
