New Year’s Day – Hereford

News

Happy New Year!  A bright, sunny, very cold day greeted runners from far flung places such as Cardiff, Malvern, Halesowen and Croft Ambrey on 1st January 2010 at Hereford Rowing Club.

Rachel Nelson and Dave Rouse Snr. flew the club flag, with Kim cheering on the sidelines. My first time round the course, it proved to be undulating country lanes with enough short hills to keep it interesting and snowy views of Hay Bluff and Hereford City in the sun.  Only 60 yards of packed ice forced us up onto the verge, and it was well marshalled all round.

Our intentions to take things easy after the festive season got swept away in the excitement of it all.  My last road run was Tenbury 2008 and I managed a pb by 3: 50, finishing in 51:48.  Dave disappeared ahead, completing it in 49:26 – just as well, as he’d assured Elaine he wouldn’t be longer than 50 minutes!  And if he was, she was to shoot him!

We both agreed the Welsh Slate coaster was very nice and much appreciated by those of us who never see the front of a race, but can still come home carrying a prize for taking part. Its what gets me out of bed!

For those of you who are interested in what was going on up in front:

173 men        66 ladies        239 finished

1st Thomas Yates (unattached) 34:36

2nd Luke Mason ( Wye Valley) 34:39

138th, (117th male) Dave Rouse snr.  in 49:26

1st Susan Marr ( Wye Valley) 39:26

160 (29th lady) Rachel Nelson 51:48
