Hanway Hill Heave

News

A disappointing turn-out for the inaugural run of this 1 mile hill race: only one non-club runner (Rachel’s brave sister), 4 from Ludlow, 5 from Croft, 1 from Telford AC and a visitor from Saffron Walden. The sun shone for the race itself, and the leading 5 sped away from the start. Dave R (jnr) and Pat pulled away gradually, until Dave opened up a bit of space, with Mick Ligema and Russell a little further back. Dave won in 8 minutes 18 (almost 7mph – uphill!), with Pat 2nd (8.43) well clear of Mick (9.07) who was nearly caught on the line by Russell (9.09). Then came a tiring Colin Lancaster (9.37), a tired Guy (9.43), Tom (10.03) [having quickly changed out of his christening gear – not his chistening!] and Nicky (10.19), ‘fresh’ from Gord’s Classic the previous evening. Rachel was 10th, not quite able to catch Elizabeth Villiers (from Essex, where they don’t have hills), in 11.22, well ahead of her practice times. Jane Mapp was next (13.04), ahead of Rachel’s sister, Becky, who gallantly completed the race (no doubt muttering under her breath, ‘never again!’).
