Sugar Loaf Fell Race

Race Reports

Report by Guy Whitmarsh.

We set off in Pantygelli to run up to the top of the Sugar Loaf (and back down). First a bit of road, then a steep lane followed by a diagonal path through bracken up onto the ridge leading to the summit. Once on the ridge I was somewhat taken aback at the distance still to run to the top! It was mostly though a pleasant, grassy track, before the steeper scramble up to the trig point, almost hidden in the mist. From there on it was, to my mind, an uncomfortably rocky track, skirting the base of the summit, before reaching some slightly easier terrain. I was conscious all the while of Gary G hunting me down! Meanwhile, Flora and Tim J were having their own ding-dong race, which Tim won by, once again, a few seconds. I stayed ahead of Gary by an even narrower margin, thanks largely to the voices cheering Gary on by name, so I knew he was close behind. 77 runners finished the race, over 9.3km with 485m of ascent.

CARC Junior; Saffi, also ran at the junior Sugar Loaf fell race, coming away as the new South Wales U13G Fell Champion. This title goes side by side with her Shropshire U13G Fell Champion title that she won earlier on in the year!
