Llanbedr to Blaenafon Fell Race

News

At just over 16 miles and 4500 feet of climb this is one of the harder races in the South Wales calendar. Gary Gunner made his annual visit, now some 6 in a row, and was joined by Tom Davies, 20 years after he last competed in the race!

Starting in the picturesque village of Llanbedr just north of Crickhowell the route takes in three large climbs, Crug Mawr, Sugar Loaf and The Blorenge before finishing at Blaenafon Rugby Club where hot showers and a buffet fit for a wedding reception awaited the bedraggled finishers. Apart from low cloud and drizzle on the Sugar Loaf the weather was ideal for running allowing Steve Cale of Mercia to follow up his Wrekin win of the previous weekend in the fast time of 2hrs 4 mins 39 secs, more than 3 minutes ahead of Richard Roberts of Eryri. Anna Bartlett of Mercia had an excellent run finishing 7th overall, first lady, in 2.31.08.

There was a very strong over 60 turnout of 9 runners, Gary just being pipped for the category honours by Les Williams of Eryri, finishing 46th overall in a time of 3.02.24. He did however manage to beat Steve Herington, a feat few Herefordshire super veterans have achieved in recent years!

Tom Davies finished 63rd, 5 th in category in 3.22.51. There were 89 finishers.
