LEINTHALL STARKES 5

News

The first Leinthall Starkes 5 race is the club’s traditional opener for the summer season. This year’s event again served as the first counting race in the Croft Ambrey club championship for 2010.

Excellent running conditions welcomed the competitors to the accurately measured 5 mile course and this was reflected in the recording of 5 P.B.’s and 2 club age group course records.

Stacey’s preparation for an attack on the London Marathon looks to be on track as he ran a solo race from the first step to set a P.B. and consolidate his status as 5th fastest of all time over the course. A fast marathon time surely awaits him if conditions are favourable.

Simon, running his first time trial as a vet., also ran most of the way on his own to take 2nd place with Dave Rouse, fresh from his excellent 3rd place in the Presteigne 10 K, third.

Gavin, Glyn, Mark and Dave George battled with each other throughout and the result depended on who was strongest on the long gradual climb towards the finish. Gavin burned off the opposition with a devastating burst over the final few hundred metres. He sliced an enormous 1 min. 21 secs. from his previous best time – an achievement all the more commendable considering the severe injury he suffered at the final cross country race at Presteigne.

Sue Davies was another solo runner in the middle of the field but she was able to concentrate on her pace judgement and push hard to set a P.B. by 6 secs. and break the club FV 45 record by over a minute. An outstanding performance.

A further club record was set by Nicky, another working her way back from a debilitating injury, as she set a FV 50 best time.

Rachel and Frank proved that they continue to improve as they both carved huge chunks off their previous best times.

Two runners made their debuts on the course. Martin gets better with every run and Kayleigh ran impressively over a longer distance than she had previously attained.

The next event will be handicapped and takes place on Tuesday 25 th May.
