Herefordshire Cross Country League – Race 5 – Presteigne

News

The postponed final race saw fewer competitors than in previous rounds -110 finishers and Gavin who twisted an ankle and did not complete the course. Croft were much better represented on the men’s side, pulling up to 3rd in the team event, but still 4th overall. Simon had a great run in 6th (49.10), just behind Luke Mason. Nigel Misselbrook made a welcome return and ran well to be next finisher in 21st (53.19), a little ahead of Dan (54.28). Dave G (26th, 55.15) completed the A team. Dave A (30th, 56.11) and Neil Powell (32nd, 56.24) were close behind. Guy came in 41st (60.20), with Mark suffering from lack of fitness finishing 43rd (60.27). Then came Tom (48th, 61.34), leading in a line of Croft runners: Neil (52nd, 62.14), Gary (62.40), Daren (62.51), Frank (63.06) and Martin (63.36). Brian Davies couldn’t quite catch the queue and was 59th, 2 places further back, in 64.47 – he didn’t stop at the finishing lane but carried on to his Landrover to get back to the call of the farm. Dave R (snr) on the back of very little training finished 64th (68.41). In the ladies’ race, Sue was 3rd (33.56), closing slightly more every race on Susan Marr in 2nd. Young Clara Evans was the outright winner in 32.12, despite once being sent the wrong way. Alison was 5th, holding off Nicola Goodwin, who is also getting stronger every race. Liza Austin is another who is steadily moving up the field: 13th (out of 31), in 39.54, a minute ahead of Rachel (15th, top half of field). The ladies’ team finished 4th, and remain 4th overall.

Over the series, Sue won the 1st FV40 award, Neil T was 3rd MV50, Tom 1st MV60 and Guy 1st MV65. The ladies (Liza, Rachel and Karen) won third vet place in the county team event, but the greatest achievement was Stacey’s being Senior Men’s Champion. Last year we had Suzanne being the ladies’ League champion – how do we follow this next year?
