Clunbury Hill Race

Race Reports

Seventy five runners, eight from Croft, took part in this 25th anniversary race which takes place at Purslow Show every August Bank Holiday.

The race starts off comfortably from the Showground, through a field (thankfully free of cattle this year), up to and along a road for a bit. Then the gradient gradually increases to a steep climb before following the ridge of the hill before coming downhill through fields back to the finish line. It is designed to be visible from the showground at most points.

A tough little 6k run made a bit harder this year by the hot, sunny conditions and the 3.30pm start always feels a little odd as I am used to running in the mornings and evenings. Good fun though and all the finishers had a medal this year in celebration of the anniversary.

Unfortunately one of the leading ladies took a nasty tumble on the downhill stoney path, which did lead to all behind her being concerned for her, with a group staying with her and everyone else most likely driving the marshall a little crazy as she made her way to the scene with our calls that she needed a first aider and likely an ambulance. There was first aid cover at the scene and the last I saw of the runner she was smiling in the front of the landrover being taken to the first aid so hopefully all was well.

Despite our small turnout Croft did well in the results. Mark Thomas, who has only been a member for a matter of weeks, is looking on fine form, having done a 10k race the day before finished third male vet, sixth place overall in 26.15m. Emma had a really good run, feeling very much at home on these Shropshire hills, was first lady home in 29.32m taking home a well deserved brand new trophy.

The boys did well too, young Tom George was representing Croft and was second boy in 28.12 and Alec took the bronze in 31.07m.

Andrew George was 17th in 28.42.

I was second vet lady (36) in 33.25 and Tom Davies 47th in 37.41. Alison Davies (71) 52.05.

This is a lovely local race which I highly recommend for Croft runners next year.
