Roc Fencing Wyre Forest 8

Gary G and Guy were the only intrepid Croft runners to turn out ( probably the only two too senile to comprehend a dire weather forecast! ). We could be forgiven for thinking we had mistaken Wyre Piddle for Wyre Forest. It rained, and blew, and rained some more.

209 runners lined up for the re-arranged race, a lower showing than usual. The course involved a fast first 2 miles downhill, then a muddy mile or so along the ( swollen ) river, and then a ( muddy/sloshy ) climb, back down to the river, more mud and then a relatively firm final 2 miles' climb up to the finish.

Dave Mansbridge won, convincingly, in 49.33. Simon Norwood ran well to finish 5th (52.26), ahead of Mick Ligema 6th ( 54.37 ) who was 1st over 50. Penny Priest ( Ludlow ) was (just) second lady and Alison third lady ( 41st overall, and awarded first F45 ). Guy struggled in 47th ( 63.32 ) a little ahead of Gary who was 56th, in 64.37.

Presteigne 10K - April 15

A warm day for this 10k race, with 68 finishers.

Croft placings: Dave Powell 31st in 42.34, Gary G 35th in 44.28 ( 1st over 60 ), Dave Rouse (snr ) 41st in 45.29 and Nigel D 52nd in 50.07.

Eastnor Castle Seven - May 13

154 runners set off around the grounds of Eastnor Castle, 3 of whom were Croft members: Gary G came in first over 60 ( 43rd overall, in 55.17 ) ahead of Brian Davies running on 'home ground' and 2nd over 60, in 57.35 ( 61st ). Nigel D was 102nd in 1.04.27.

May 16th Rhayader 5k race 1
Atrocious weather conditions greeted us for the first race in the series. It always seems to be the same up here. Perfect weather in Rhayader itself, but as you head out to the start at the first dam, you just know that it’s going to be wet and windy.
Finished 3rd in this one with 17:35, D.Davies 1st in 17:15 and P.Kendrick 2nd in 17:33
Excellent cakes and biscuits in the leisure centre afterwards.

May 22nd Brecon 3
Didn’t have a good run here, running a lot slower than last year. Trailed home 6th in 17:18, with Will Levett 1st in around 15 Mins.

May 27th Crocodile 8
Unusually wet and muddy for this one. Not as many runners as previous years, partly due to the weather, but there were also a number of other races in the area.
I really enjoyed this one; it was great to be back racing again. This was the first time I had run more than six miles since before Christmas so was pleased to finish 9th in 55:28. A lack of fitness certainly showed over the last couple of miles.
Tim Clarke took the honours in 52:18, an excellent time considering the conditions.
Other Croft places; Pat Pearson 19th 59:01; Ian Price 40th 63:36 3rd V55; Brian Davies 74th 68:11 1st V60; Jon Utley 84th 69:33.
Would have been nice to have seen a bigger turn out by Croft considering this was a club championship event.

May 30th Rhayader 5k race 2
Wet and windy yet again! Legs still heavy from Sunday, but still finished 3rd in 17:24, behind T Marshall 15:45 and D Davies 17:08.

Herefordshire Summer Series Off-Road - Race 1, Monkhall Farm - June 28

After the floods, it turned out to be lovely evening, even if a bit wet underfoot: it was a varied but tough course with two laps, including 2 crossings of the stream.

Matt James came out winner ( behind Will Levett, who chose not to count ) in 31.47, 30 seconds up on Tim Clarke, with Luke Mason 3rd. Stacey ran well, just behind a group of four, in 8th place ( 33.54 ). Simon Norwood hung on to 7th. Then came Gary Pearson ( 13th, 36.29 ), showing no ill effects from the 3 Peaks Race, followed by brother Pat, who has also recovered well ( 17th, 37.20 ). New member Bill Layton made a fine start, being first over 50 ( 19th, 37.42 ). John Utley was 29th ( 39.31 ), with Guy just behind in 30th ( 39.34, first over 60 ). Gary Gunner, in his third race in 5 days, did well to get round in 37th ( 40.58 ) just ahead of Tom ( 41st, 41.19 ) who was second over 55, by a mere 12 seconds. Alison found it hard after racing at the weekend, and came in 5th lady, first over 45, in 47th ( 41.47 ). Dave Rouse ( snr ) was 56th ( 43.25 ) with Nigel D 76th ( 48.51 )

Brecon ‘4’ June 5th Race results June 2007 by Stacey Morgan

Brecon AC enjoyed another successful evening road race as the ‘Llanfrynach 4’, sponsored by ‘The Brecon and Radnor Express’ and the second in the fortnightly 3,4,5 Mile series attracted a good entry with some excellent performances. 71 people took part in the main race which was a record for the 4 miler and second only to this year’s 3 mile event a fortnight earlier.
The winner this time and course record breaker into the bargain was former GB U20 international and ex Brecon AC athlete Andrew Hunt who smashed the old record by nearly two minutes stopping the clock in 20mins07. In second place M40 Lee Aherne of Club 69 Tredegar also edged inside the old record held by Brecon AC’s Phil Kendrick, and in the process made himself the fastest over 40 on this course in the three years of its running. David Davies of Spa Tans, Llandrindod, was 3rd in 22mins43 which would be an excellent time for anyone let alone an M50. As the first two from the 3 mile race did not run this one Dave finds himself heading the table going in to the last race although the format for winning is to add up the 3 times recorded and the lowest total wins so strange things could happen yet.
I finished 5th on the night, in a time of 23:08 which moved me up into 3rd place overall.

Rhayader 5k race 3 June 13th
This was the final race in this popular 5k series, and for once we had reasonable weather.
Conscious of the fact that I keep losing a lot of time over D Davies in the second mile, feeling pretty good I decided to gain an early lead over him, following the lead runner. However my initial pace was far too quick, 5:04 thru the first mile, and I found myself struggling with a stitch in mile 2 and Dave came storming by me. I slowed until I had recovered, then set off after him, slowly closing him down but the line came too early. D Evans finished a long way clear to win in 16:11, Dave finished 2nd in 17:08 I was just behind him with 17:12
This was enough to give Dave the overall title, a cash prize and a bottle of wine. I managed to sneak into 2nd place also receiving cash and wine, P Kendrick finished 3rd.

Brecon ‘5’ June 19th

Despite lightning storms and heavy rain hitting Brecon and other areas of mid Wales, Llanfrynach was a picture of relative calm and tranquillity allowing the Brecon AC Road Race series to conclude successfully with another record turnout for the 5 mile race. Sponsored this year by ‘The Brecon and Radnor Express’ the series has been even more popular with local athletes and fun runners alike with a few coming from the Hereford area or South Wales and promising to spread the word next year.
On the night the 5 mile race was won by Will Levett of Wye Valley Runners who unfortunately this time was not able to match his record-breaking 3 mile run so the 2006 course record remains intact. At 25.59 however Will was nearly 3 minutes clear of second placed David Davies of Spa Tans (28.49) who was himself running exceptionally well as a M50 to beat many younger runners. Third home was local fell runner Crispin Flower of Mynydd Du in a time of 29.00. Stacey Morgan of Croft Ambrey (29.03) was 4th, ahead of Adrian Woods (Bridgend) and recent 100 mile competitor Phil Kendrick (Brecon AC) who thought the run went by in the blink of an eye. The first female competitor was 19 year old Jo Summerfield (Brecon AC) who completed in an impressive 33mins14 ahead of Bethan Woods (Cwmbran) in 35.24 and F55 Jacky Austin of Club 69, Tredegar in 37.04.
Earlier, the ‘1 and a bit mile’ fun run had once again been won impressively by local lad Ben Wigmore representing Llanfaes County Primary School in a time of 8.35 with 1st girl Abi Wyatt (Brecon AC) 2nd in the race in 9.02 and Jill Buck 3rd in 9.12 reflecting a national trend where girls are more likely to be good at endurance sport than boys.
   After the event there was a small presentation for the night’s races and a much more extensive series prize list as well as a buffet for all who stayed. All those who competed in the 3 races were ‘presented’ with a T-shirt while there were medals, wine and chocolates for all of the category winners. The overall series winner (all ages) for 2007, winning a £25 cheque donated by Brecon Car Sales, Llanfaes was David Davies of Spa Tans, Llandrindod Wells. ‘Basher’ also won the M50 category prize to add to his haul for the night and had a combined time of 1.08.15. 2nd overall was SM Stacey Morgan (1.09.30) and 3rd M40 Adrian Woods (1.09.39 who both won smaller cash prizes as well as the medals and wine. On the female side where the prizes were the same it was three U20’s who profited with Jo Summerfield winning in 1.21.19 ahead of Bethan Woods (1.22.46) and Leigh Barker (1.25.06).
All three of the overall prize winners also won their respective age group category, receiving medals and wine/chocolates.
I started the evening in third place overall 26 seconds adrift of Adrian, but managed to finish 35 seconds in front of him to clinch second place.

SUMMER OFF ROAD, RACE 2 KINNERSLEY ( 18.07.07 )

Second summer off-road race, second lovely evening, again pretty muddy and wet underfoot. 81 runners took part, though Croft had a smaller than ususal turnout, in part due to certain 40 somethings suffering from the after-effects of the multi-events last week. So, Gary P was left to carry the flag, having another fine run to finish 10th in 34.42, closely followed by Bill Layton, first over 50 ( by a mile! ) in 12th ( 35.24 ). Guy was 25th ( 37.34 ) and 1st over 60, just in front ( this time ) of Jon Utley, 30th, in 37.49 Alison was first lady (and also 1st over 45 ) in 34th ( 39.17 ), with Tom 2 places behind in 39.26. Natalie, bravely choosing this to be her cross country comeback, completed the team in 80th, with dad accompanying her round. We finished 9th team.

Summer Off-road, Race 3, Shobdon - August 1st

76 runners competed around this slightly altered course ( due to fallen trees ), with Croft having a relatively good turn out, with 8 members running.

Tim Clarke managed to get the better of Matt James on this occasion, winning in 31.13, 40 seconds ahead. Simon Norwood was 4th ( 33.15 ), Gary P 12th ( 35.42 ) and Bill Layton 15th in 36.40, again first over 50. Nigel Mason had a good run, coming in 22nd ( 37.59 ) just ahead of Jon U, 26th ( 39.08 ). Alison was third lady in 29th ( 39.46 ), followed by Richard Hornsby having his first competetive run for Croft, in 32nd ( 39.51 ). Dave George was just behind in 34th ( 40.29 ) and Tom had a good run in 36th ( 40.40 ). Gary G was 44th, in 41.50.
